Researching media, technology, politics and Southeast Asian society

Welcome and selamat datang to my official webpage! My name is Nuurrianti, and I am a media, communication and Southeast Asian studies scholar, interested in researching media and technology in the Southeast Asian region

I am Dr. Nuurrianti Jalli, an Assistant Professor at the School of Media and Strategic Communications at Oklahoma State University. My research centers on digital media, disinformation, and cybersecurity in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Malaysia and Indonesia. Through my work, I have helped advance our understanding of information warfare dynamics and digital propaganda in the region. Currently, I also serve as a visiting research fellow at the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) Yusof Ishak in Singapore and research affiliate at Data and Democracy Research Hub, Monash University Indonesia.

After completing my Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Ohio University, I have established myself as one of the leading experts on digital media manipulation and digital propaganda in Southeast Asia. My research approach combines quantitative, qualitative and computational methods to examine social media discourse, cyber troop operations, and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns.

My work appears in numerous academic publications, and I regularly present my findings at major international conferences. Media organizations and policy institutions frequently seek my expertise on digital security and information disorders in Southeast Asia. Throughout my career, I have been awarded several research grants and fellowships that support my investigations into digital resilience and cybersecurity education initiatives.

At the moment, I am also actively searching for a new position focusing on Media/Tech Studies and/or Global Affairs in North America, Singapore or in the Middle East.

My research spans a broad spectrum of media studies and emerging technologies, with a keen focus on how they shape and influence society. I’m particularly interested in:

Digital Propaganda and Disinformation: Understanding how false information spreads and impacts democratic processes, especially in the context of political communication and online ecosystems.

Media and Tech Policies: Examining the regulatory frameworks and policies that govern media and technology, with a focus on their implications for freedom of expression, privacy, and ethical standards.

Media and Information Literacy: Exploring strategies to equip people with the critical skills they need to navigate today’s complex media environment, from identifying misinformation to fostering responsible digital citizenship.

Media and Information Warfare: Investigating the use of media as a tool in information warfare, particularly how state and non-state actors leverage media to influence public opinion and political outcomes.

I am the lead author of Misguided Democracy in Malaysia and Indonesia: Digital Propaganda in Southeast Asia. The book was inspired by my deep fascination with the subject, particularly the ways digital propaganda is employed in Southeast Asia to shape political dynamics. This annual program, organized by Popular, one of the leading bookstores in Malaysia and Singapore, engages the local community in celebrating their favorite authors and works by inviting them to nominate and vote for outstanding local publications.

“A very timely book written to address the concerns and discuss on the ongoing fake media campaign used by various parties to create multiple objectives be it good or bad. Contains sample of propaganda done on social media along with interesting flow charts on the process of making a fake item seems real” – Verified reader on Gerak Budaya.

A glimpse of my Media in a Diversity class – Spring 2025

Here’s a quick glimpse of my 9 AM Media in a Diverse Society lecture. In this particular lecture, we covered a topic on global media and politics. This video was taken with student consent as a part of my initiative to assist students who could not make it to class due to severe winter weather in Oklahoma.
This podcast on social media responsibility was recorded as part of my graduate-level Responsible Mass Communication class at the School of Media and Strategic Communications, Oklahoma State University. It serves as a supplementary resource on Canvas to support students’ understanding of the topic.
